Mesothelioma is a cancer of the mesothelium, the thin lining of the lungs (pleura), abdomen (peritoneum) and heart. Nearly all cases follow exposure to asbestos fibres, which lodge in the lining when inhaled or swallowed and cause the disease decades later; that is why asbestos mining and asbestos-cement work are regulated.
Cadmium is linked to kidney damage and itai-itai disease, arsenic to skin lesions and skin, lung and bladder cancers, and lead to nerve and brain damage. None of them is the recognised cause of mesothelioma.
