A * B means A is the sister of B
A $ B means B is the mother of A
A + B means A is the brother of B
A = B means B is the father of A.
Which of the following means M is the maternal uncle of N?
Answer: D
Correct answer: None of these
For M to be N’s maternal uncle, M must be male and a brother of N’s mother. Taking the options in turn: the first makes M’s father the brother of N’s sister, which settles nothing; the second makes Q both the father and the sister of others, a contradiction; and the third does put N’s mother Q beside M, but only as Q is the sister of M, which leaves M’s own sex open. Nothing establishes the relation, so the answer is none of these.
