Discussion
In a certain code language, A + B = A is the husband of B, A - B = A is the brother of B, A × B = A is the father of B, and A ÷ B = A is the son of B. How is P related to S if P × Q - R + S?
Answer: C
P x Q - R + S gives: P is the father of Q, Q is the brother of R, and R is the husband of S. So P is the father of R, and R is the husband of S, which makes P the father-in-law of S.
Brother-in-law and brother would be the relations of a person of the same generation as S, and father alone would ignore that the link goes through S's husband R. So P is S's father-in-law.
