A man can row at 6 km/hr in still water. If the river runs at 2 km/hr and it takes him 3 hours to row to a place and come back, how far is the place ?
Answer: D
Correct answer: 8 km
Downstream he moves at 8 km/hr and upstream at 4 km/hr. Letting the distance be \(x\):
\[\frac{x}{8} + \frac{x}{4} = 3 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad \frac{x + 2x}{8} = 3 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad 3x = 24\]
So \(x = 8\) km, taking 1 hour out and 2 hours back.
