Loose husk of bulk density \( 100 \) kg/m\(^3\) is briquetted to \( 650 \) kg/m\(^3\). The volume for a given mass falls by a factor of
Answer: C
Correct answer: 6.5
For a fixed mass, volume varies inversely with density, so the reduction factor is the ratio of the two densities:
\[ \frac{650}{100} = 6.5 \]
The same mass now occupies less than a sixth of the space. Since a lorry carrying loose husk fills its volume long before its weight limit, that factor translates almost directly into transport cost per tonne - which is what turns a residue usable only at the mill into one that can be sold at a distance.
