The steps of recovering a display when the screen is blank are listed below. Put them in order.
1. Set the trigger mode to automatic 2. Check that the intensity is turned up 3. Adjust the trigger level onto the waveform 4. Centre the trace with the vertical position control

Intensity first, because nothing else can be seen without it; then automatic triggering to force a sweep whether or not the signal triggers; then centre what appears; and only with a visible trace is there anything to set the trigger level against.
