EDTA binds the ______________ ions.
Answer: D
Correct answer: calcium
EDTA is a chelating agent, and in cell culture it is used to bind calcium (and magnesium) ions. Those ions are required by the cadherins that hold cells to each other and to the substrate, so removing them loosens the attachments - which is why EDTA is used with trypsin to detach a monolayer.
