Assertion (A): Tempered glass is much stronger in bending than the same glass annealed.
Reason (R): The surface is held in compression, so an applied tensile stress must first overcome it.
Answer: C
Both are true and the reason gives the mechanism: glass fails from surface flaws in tension, and putting the surface into compression means the flaws are held closed until the applied load is large. Annealed glass has no such protection at its surface.
