Discussion
A soda lime glass batch is 72 per cent silica, 14 per cent soda and 10 per cent lime, with 4 per cent other oxides. What is the ratio of silica to soda?
Answer: D
Seventy-two divided by fourteen is a little over five. The ratio is worth remembering because it fixes the melting behaviour of the batch more than any single component does. Real batches also carry alumina and magnesia.
