Assertion (A): The methylene blue test survives in laboratories that own far more sophisticated instruments.
Reason (R): It is quick, needs no capital equipment and answers a question that matters daily.
Answer: C
Correct answer: Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A
Both are true and the reason gives the justification. The methylene blue test measures cation exchange capacity by titration and takes a few minutes on the bench with no instrument at all, and it reports the swelling clay content - which is what governs plasticity, water demand and casting behaviour, and what varies most between deliveries. A test that answers the daily question quickly is not displaced by one that answers a different question slowly.
