Fired colour depends on how the iron, titanium and organic matter behave at temperature and in the kiln atmosphere, and no analysis of the raw material predicts it reliably - two clays of similar iron content can fire quite differently. Composition, phases and particle size are all measured cold. That is why a firing trial remains part of the acceptance routine.
