Discussion
Match each softener class with its characteristic behaviour.
List I
A. Cationic
B. Anionic
C. Non-ionic
D. Silicone
List II
1. compatible with almost anything, moderate softness
2. excellent softness and good substantivity, but yellows
3. outstanding smoothness and sewability, higher cost
4. less substantive, compatible with anionic dyes
Answer: B
The ionic class decides both the softness delivered and what the softener can be combined with. A cationic softener on a brightened white is the classic incompatibility to avoid. Silicones are the premium option of the four.
