In Freud's theory of psychosexual development, the anal stage covers roughly the second and third years of life. Pleasure centres on the anus and on holding back and letting go of faeces, which is why toilet training is the key event of the stage and why children of this age are interested in talk about urine and faeces.
The oral stage (birth to about 18 months) centres on the mouth, the phallic stage (about 3 to 6 years) on the genitals and the Oedipus complex, and the genital stage begins at puberty.
