Discipline and clear limits help a child to provide security and clarity about boundaries.
Clear, consistent rules tell children what is expected of them and what will happen if they break the rules. Knowing where the limits are makes children feel safe and gives them a framework within which to develop self-control.
Discipline is not meant mainly to display parental authority or to produce unquestioning obedience, which authoritarian parenting aims at and which can harm a child's development. Labelling the child as a 'good boy or girl' is not its purpose either.
