S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, and Z are seated around a circular table. T's neighbours are Y and V. Z is seated third to the left of T and second to the right of S. U's neighbours are S and Y; and T and W are not seated opposite each other. Who is third to the left of V?
Answer: A
Third to the left of V is X.
Number the eight seats 0 to 7 around the table, counting 'to the left' as one direction round the circle. Put T in seat 0.
- Z is third to the left of T: seat 3.
- Z is second to the right of S, so S is two seats to the left of Z: seat 5.
- T's neighbours are Y and V, in seats 1 and 7. U sits between S and Y, so U must be in seat 6 next to S, which puts Y in seat 7 and V in seat 1.
- W and X take seats 2 and 4. Seat 4 is opposite T, and W is not opposite T, so W is in seat 2 and X in seat 4.
Counting three seats to the left of V (seat 1) reaches seat 4, which is X. W is one seat to the left of V, U is three seats to the right of V, and T is V's neighbour on the right, so none of them is third to the left.
