Discussion
Consider the following statements about observing cloud cover.
1. Cover is conventionally reported in eighths of the sky.
2. The report distinguishes cover by layer as well as in total.
3. Cover is reported as a single figure for the whole sky only.
Answer: B
The first two are correct and describe the standard practice using oktas. The third omits the layer reporting that makes the observation useful for aviation and for forecasting alike. A single total would hide a broken low deck beneath a solid high one.
