If FRIEND is coded as HUMJTK, how is CANDLE written in that code ?

Correct answer: EDRIRL
The shift increases along the word. FRIEND to HUMJTK is F+2, R+3, I+4, E+5, N+6, D+7. Applying the same increasing shift to CANDLE gives C+2=E, A+3=D, N+4=R, D+5=I, L+6=R, E+7=L, that is EDRIRL. A constant shift would not reproduce the example, so the differences must be worked out letter by letter.
