The device that does not belong to direct democracy is Election.
Electing representatives is the basic mechanism of indirect or representative democracy: citizens choose others to decide for them.
The referendum (voting on a law or issue), the recall (removing an elected official before the term ends) and the initiative (citizens proposing a law) all let the people decide directly, and are the classic devices of direct democracy, used widely in Switzerland.
