Consider the following statements about flow across a normal shock wave:
1. The stagnation temperature is unchanged.
2. The stagnation pressure falls.
3. The entropy of the gas falls.
Which of the statements given above is or are correct?
Answer: C
The first two are correct: a shock is adiabatic, so total energy survives, but it is irreversible, so stagnation pressure does not. The third violates the second law outright. Entropy must rise across a shock, and it is that rise which forbids expansion shocks from existing at all.
