What does the term ‘booting’ mean?
Answer: B
Correct answer: Starting a computer and loading its operating system
Booting is the process of starting a computer and loading its operating system into memory. The word comes from bootstrapping, from the impossible image of lifting oneself by one’s own bootstraps - the machine must run a program in order to load a program. The sequence is fixed. The processor executes firmware - BIOS or UEFI - from a chip on the motherboard; the POST checks the essential hardware; the firmware finds a boot device according to the configured order; it loads the bootstrap loader from it; and that loads the operating system kernel, which then starts the rest of the system. A cold boot starts from a powered-off state and runs the full self test; a warm boot restarts a running machine, skipping some checks - the reset combination Ctrl + Alt + Del. Dual booting means having more than one operating system installed with a menu to choose between them.
