The hinge moment is written \( H = C_h \bar q S_e \bar c_e \). For \( C_h = -0.15 \), \( \bar q = 3000 \ \mathrm{Pa} \), \( S_e = 2.0 \ \mathrm{m^2} \) and \( \bar c_e = 0.5 \ \mathrm{m} \), the hinge moment is
Answer: B
Substituting directly into the definition:
\[ \begin{aligned} H &= -0.15 \times 3000 \times 2.0 \times 0.5 \\ &= -450 \ \mathrm{N\,m} \end{aligned} \]
so -450 newton metres, the sign indicating a moment that tends to move the surface trailing edge up. -900 doubles the chord or forgets a factor of two somewhere. -225 halves the area. -45 slips a decade. Note the reference geometry: the surface's own area and mean chord aft of the hinge, not the wing's, which is why hinge moment coefficients from one aeroplane cannot be applied to another without care.
