How many stereo isomers are possible in total on polymerization of butadiene?
Answer: D
The key counts 5 stereoisomeric forms.
Butadiene can polymerise in two ways. In 1,4-addition the remaining double bond lies in the backbone and can be cis or trans, giving two forms. In 1,2-addition the double bond is left in a vinyl side group on a chiral carbon, and the chain can be isotactic, syndiotactic or atactic, giving three more.
1,4-cis, 1,4-trans, 1,2-isotactic, 1,2-syndiotactic and 1,2-atactic make five. A count of four leaves out the atactic form; two or three count only one mode of addition.
