The gist of criminal conspiracy is agreement.
Section 120-A IPC defines criminal conspiracy as an agreement between two or more persons to do an illegal act, or a legal act by illegal means. The agreement itself is the offence; for an agreement to commit an offence no further act is needed.
Knowledge and a meeting may be evidence of agreement but are not its essence, and common intention (section 34) is a principle of joint liability for an act actually done, not an independent offence.
