What is Nitin's rank from the top in a class of forty students ?

1. There are ten students between Nitin and Deepak.
2. Deepak is twentieth from the top.
Answer: D
Correct answer: Neither 1 or 2 is sufficient
Statement 2 places Deepak twentieth from the top and statement 1 puts ten students between him and Nitin, but Nitin may be on either side - ninth from the top or thirty-first. The two possibilities cannot be distinguished, so even both statements together fail to fix the rank.
