Discussion
A question is given, followed by two statements labelled I and II. Read the question and the statements, and decide whether the data provided in the statements are sufficient/necessary to answer the question.
Question:
What is the code for 'blood' in the code language?
Statements:
I. In the code language, 'yu ui qw' means 'blood is red'.
II. In the same code language, 'ls yu wd ui' means 'this is red flag'.
Answer: C
The data in both statements together are necessary and sufficient, so the answer is the third option.
From statement I, 'yu ui qw' means 'blood is red'. Statement II gives 'ls yu wd ui' for 'this is red flag'. The words yu and ui appear in both codes, and 'is' and 'red' appear in both meanings, so yu and ui stand for 'is' and 'red'. Then the remaining code qw in statement I must mean 'blood'.
Statement I alone cannot tell which of yu, ui and qw is 'blood', and statement II alone does not contain 'blood' at all. So both statements are needed together.
This kind of question is solved by looking for a common word in the codes. Only the words 'is' and 'red' appear in both sentences, and the codes yu and ui appear in both, so they must stand for those two words. Once they are known, the leftover word in the first sentence, 'blood', must be qw, and both statements are used.
