Taking the same machine, how much power is being dissipated as heat in its armature winding?
Answer: B
Correct answer: 800 W
The armature copper loss is
\[ P_{cu} = I_a^2R_a = 40^2 \times 0.5 = 1600 \times 0.5 = 800 \text{ W} \]This is the variable loss, rising with the square of the current, and it is also the difference between the 8.8 kW drawn by the armature and the 8.0 kW converted to mechanical form.
