Assertion (A): A designer needs the Weibull modulus of a ceramic as well as its mean strength.
Reason (R): The stress that can be tolerated at an acceptable failure probability depends on the scatter.
Answer: A
Both are true and the reason gives the necessity: two materials of identical mean strength differ greatly in the stress that can be carried safely if one has a much wider distribution than the other. Design stress falls steeply as the modulus drops.
