Material A has a Weibull modulus of 5 and material B has 20, with the same mean strength. Which permits a higher design stress at a given failure probability?
Answer: B
Correct answer: material B, whose strengths scatter less
Design is done at a low probability of failure, in the weak tail of the distribution, and it is the scatter that sets how far below the mean that tail extends. With the same mean, the material with the modulus of 20 has a much shorter tail than the one with 5, so a far higher stress may be allowed at the same risk. A high Weibull modulus is worth more to a designer than a high mean strength.
