Four criteria are weighted \( 0.4, 0.3, 0.2 \) and \( 0.1 \), with an option scoring \( 8, 6, 9 \) and \( 5 \). Its figure of merit is
Answer: C
Correct answer: 7.3
The figure of merit is the weighted sum:
\[ 0.4(8) + 0.3(6) + 0.2(9) + 0.1(5) = 3.2 + 1.8 + 1.8 + 0.5 = 7.3 \]The weights sum to unity, so the result is on the same scale as the individual scores and can be compared directly with another option’s. Adding the raw scores instead, giving 28, ignores the weighting entirely and would treat the least important criterion as equal to the most.
