Akash travelled 4 km straight towards south. He turned left and travelled 6 km straight, then turned right and travelled 4 km straight. How far is he from the starting point?
Answer: C
Akash is 10 km from the starting point.
Walking south and then turning left means turning to face east. After 6 km east he turns right, which faces south again, and walks 4 km. So in total he is 4 + 4 = 8 km south and 6 km east of the start.
\[ d = \sqrt{8^{2} + 6^{2}} = \sqrt{100} = 10\ \text{km} \]
18 km is the total distance walked, not the straight-line distance. 8 km counts only the southward part, and 12 km fits no combination of the legs; the displacement combines 8 km south with 6 km east.
