Formative assessment is A and C: assessment for learning and assessment as learning.
Formative assessment takes place during learning to improve it. As assessment for learning, the teacher uses it to give feedback and adjust teaching. As assessment as learning, students take part in it themselves, through self- and peer-assessment, and learn to monitor their own progress.
Assessment of learning is summative: it measures what has been learnt at the end of a period. 'Assessment about learning' is not a recognised category.
