Discussion
Arrange the events of one Dutch roll cycle, beginning with a gust that yaws the nose to the right.
1. Sideslip develops from the left
2. The fin generates a yawing moment back to the left
3. Dihedral effect rolls the aeroplane to the right
4. The nose swings through the trimmed heading to the left
5. Sideslip reverses and the sequence repeats to the other side
Select the correct sequence.
Answer: A
The chain runs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. The yaw produces sideslip; the fin turns the nose back; the same sideslip rolls the aeroplane through dihedral effect; the nose overshoots the trimmed heading because the fin's restoring moment is not damped out; and the sideslip reverses to start the other half of the cycle. Putting the fin's moment before the sideslip inverts cause and effect, since the fin can only respond to sideslip once it exists.
