Discussion
Arrange these steps in the flight-test determination of Dutch roll damping.
1. Trim the aeroplane at the test condition with the damper off
2. Apply a rudder doublet and return the pedals to centre
3. Record the sideslip trace as the oscillation decays
4. Measure the ratio of successive peaks for the logarithmic decrement
5. Convert the decrement into a damping ratio
Select the correct sequence.
Answer: D
The sequence is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and each step depends on the one before it: the aeroplane must be trimmed before the input means anything, the input must be released before the free motion exists, and peaks cannot be measured before the trace is recorded. The damper is switched off deliberately, because the requirement is written on the bare airframe as well as on the augmented one.
