Which statement about the relationship between static and dynamic longitudinal stability is correct?
Answer: C
Static stability is about the initial tendency, dynamic stability about the whole subsequent motion. A statically stable aeroplane starts back towards trim; whether it arrives, overshoots or diverges in oscillation is a dynamic question answered by the roots of the quartic. They are not the same property, since an aeroplane can be statically stable and still oscillate divergently. Both are assessed in stick-fixed and stick-free form, so the distinction is not one of control freedom. And static stability is a property of the aeroplane rather than a case of either mode.
