The answer is immediate feedback.
Feedback is the receiver's response to the message. It tells the sender whether the message was received and understood as intended, and lets him correct misunderstanding at once. Immediate feedback turns one-way transmission into a two-way process, which is why it is treated as the key to effective communication, for example in face-to-face teaching.
Media, message and sender are all necessary elements, but without feedback the sender cannot know whether the communication has worked.
