The distance from the centre of gravity to the neutral point, expressed as a fraction of the mean aerodynamic chord, is called the _____.
Answer: D
Correct answer: static margin
The static margin is
\[ K_n = \frac{x_{np} - x_{cg}}{\bar{c}} \]
and it is the standard measure of longitudinal static stability, positive when the centre of gravity lies forward of the neutral point. Transports typically require a minimum of around 5 per cent.
The tail volume coefficient is a geometric ratio of the tail to the wing; the aerodynamic centre is the point about which the pitching moment does not vary with angle of attack; and the neutral point is one end of the distance the static margin measures, not the distance itself.
