The ratio of brake power to indicated power of an I.C. engine is called:
Answer: A
It is called the mechanical efficiency.
Indicated power is the power developed by the gas on the pistons; brake power is what reaches the crankshaft after friction and pumping losses. Their ratio, \(\eta_{m} = BP/IP\), measures those mechanical losses, typically 80 to 90 per cent.
Thermal efficiency compares power with the heat in the fuel, volumetric efficiency compares the air drawn in with the swept volume, and relative efficiency compares actual thermal efficiency with the air standard efficiency.
