Which advantage does that coordinate give for polar vortex studies?

Because the vortex edge is a material contour of potential vorticity, plotting against equivalent latitude places the edge at a fixed coordinate however distorted the vortex becomes geographically. Chemical measurements from different days and locations can then be compared meaningfully. This was essential to establishing the chemistry of the ozone hole. Checking the units of each quantity catches a wrong formula before the arithmetic begins.
