Discussion
Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Assertion (A) and other as Reason (R).
Assertion (A) : Green revolution in Punjab has resulted in many ecological problems.
Reason (R) : Ill effects of green revolution are due to overuse of land, water, pesticides and fertilizers.
Select the correct answer from the codes given below.
Answer: A
The answer is Both (A) and (R) are correct and (R) is correct explanation of (A).
The Green Revolution in Punjab raised wheat and rice yields but brought serious ecological problems: falling water tables, soil degradation and loss of fertility, salinity, pesticide residues and loss of crop diversity.
Those problems arise precisely from intensive overuse of land, groundwater, chemical fertilisers and pesticides under the high-yielding-variety package, so the reason explains the assertion.
