Which International Conference was the main cause of enactment of the Environment Protection Act, 1986 in India?
Answer: B
The Act followed the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment.
The Stockholm Conference of June 1972 was the first major UN conference on the environment. India took part, and the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 was passed under Article 253, which lets Parliament legislate to implement international decisions; its preamble refers to the decisions taken at Stockholm. The Bhopal gas disaster of 1984 added urgency.
The International Conference on Population and Development was held at Cairo in 1994, the UN Conference on International Organization at San Francisco in 1945 (it drafted the UN Charter), and the UN Climate Change Conferences began in 1995, all unrelated to the 1986 Act.
