An EIA predicts the likely effects of a proposed project on the environment and people before it is approved, so that alternatives and mitigation can be considered. In India it is a legal requirement for many categories of project.
Environmental auditing checks the performance of an operation that is already running. Biodiversity and demographic surveys may feed into an EIA, but they are not the assessment itself.
