A mixture is 40 per cent A and 60 per cent B by mole. Using a linear mixing rule with b equal to 0.05 and 0.10 litres per mole, what is the mixture value of b?
Answer: D
Four tenths of five hundredths plus six tenths of one tenth gives eight hundredths. Taking a plain arithmetic average instead of a mole fraction weighting is the common error and gives seventy-five thousandths instead.
