Find out the heart rate of a person whose cardiac output (Q) is 20 litres per minute and the stroke volume is 0.15 liters per beat ?
Answer: A
The heart rate is about 133 beats/minute.
Cardiac output is the product of heart rate and stroke volume, \(Q = HR \times SV\), so:
\[ \begin{aligned} HR &= \frac{Q}{SV} = \frac{20\ \text{L/min}}{0.15\ \text{L/beat}} \\ &\approx 133\ \text{beats/min} \end{aligned} \]
125 beats/minute would need a stroke volume of 0.16 L. 70 beats/minute is a typical resting rate and 180 an exercise maximum, neither of which follows from these figures.
