Discussion
Consider the following statements about an underexpanded nozzle:
1. Its exit pressure is above the ambient pressure.
2. Expansion fans spring from the nozzle lip.
3. Oblique shocks spring from the nozzle lip.
Which of the statements given above is or are correct?
Answer: A
The first two describe the underexpanded case: the gas is still above ambient pressure and continues expanding outside the nozzle through fans at the lip. The third belongs to the overexpanded case, where the exit pressure is too low and shocks are needed to recompress the plume.
