Discussion
Consider the following statements about shock-expansion theory:
1. It handles compression turns with oblique shock relations.
2. It handles expansion turns with the Prandtl-Meyer function.
3. It accounts for the boundary layer on the section.
Which of the statements given above is or are correct?
Answer: D
The first two describe exactly what the method does. The third is false: the theory is purely inviscid, so it gives pressure drag and lift but says nothing about skin friction or about shock-induced separation, both of which need a boundary-layer calculation alongside it.
