Discussion
Consider the following statements comparing a shock with an expansion fan:
1. Both are adiabatic.
2. Only the shock produces an appreciable entropy rise.
3. Both leave the stagnation temperature unchanged.
Which of the statements given above is or are correct?
Answer: D
All three are correct. Neither process exchanges heat, so both are adiabatic and both conserve stagnation temperature. They part company only on reversibility, and it is the shock's entropy rise that destroys stagnation pressure while the fan leaves it intact.
