The most suitable topic for Class 3 is the Family Tree.
Under the theme 'Family and Friends', Class 3 children start with their own family: who belongs to it, how members are related and how they resemble each other. Drawing a family tree is concrete and personal, so it suits eight-year-olds and the EVS principle of moving from the familiar outwards.
Causes of the changing nature of the family and changes in the family call for an understanding of time and social change that is taken up in later classes. 'Society as family' is an abstract idea that is too broad for Class 3.
