Discussion
Consider the following statements about junction field effect transistors.
1. The channel conducts with zero gate voltage
2. The gate must never be forward biased
3. The transfer characteristic follows a square law
Which of the statements given above is or are correct?
Answer: D
All three are correct, and between them they define the device: normally on, controlled by reverse bias, and square-law in its transfer. The first explains why self bias works, the second why the input impedance is high, and the third why the transconductance is modest. Three properties, three consequences, and the whole of the device's behaviour follows from them. A single measurement chosen to respond to the one asymmetry beats several that respond to shared behaviour.
