Indian television soap operas are shot overwhelmingly on indoor studio sets, the rich family home being the typical setting, because indoor shooting is cheaper, faster and easy to control for daily episodes.
The other three are well-known distinguishing features of the genre: stories centred on women, especially the daughter-in-law and mother-in-law; loud, melodramatic treatment with repeated dramatic zooms and background music; and plots driven by marital and family conflict.
