Which condition defines an adiabatic process?
Answer: D
Adiabatic means no heat crosses the boundary of the parcel, though work may still be done and the temperature may change considerably. Vertical motion in the atmosphere is very nearly adiabatic because it is fast compared with radiative and conductive exchange. A reversible adiabatic process conserves entropy, which is why potential temperature is conserved along it. Most errors here come from carrying a result across from a neighbouring case where it does not hold.
